Perfecting The Journey

Since the start of the pandemic we have been on a journey to discover new ways of making work. Early on we knew we wanted to do something new... use new equipment, go to new places, learn new processes. We also knew we wanted to travel. And since air travel has become either impossible or downright frightening, we thought road trips were a great way to safely travel and discover parts unknown that may be just a few hours drive from home.

So, we teamed up with our friends at TUMI and hit the road. We hope to inspire you to take your own journey!

We wanted capture the beautiful silence of the Death Valley. As we drove through the terrain, we noticed the yellow bushes first peeking then filling the valley and decided to park and hike to find our perfect spot. We love the balance created by the yellow flora and the blue sky.

Is the Tumi bag resting on the tree or is the tree resting on the bag?

We found a great spot to have lunch. As we were sitting and talking, we noticed the clouds passing over creating this amazing pattern on the valley below. Seemed like a good time to grab the camera.

We typically travel for work between NY, LA, and at times London, taking photos of actors, musicians, and models. An airplane had become a second office of sorts but when the pandemic put us all into lockdown we had to come up with new ways of traveling and working.

Having found road trips a safe alternative to air travel, we decided on a route going from Jesper’s house in LA to Vegas. A way for us to reunite and take some time to enjoy the view.

This was one of the first images we had planned out when we decided to take this journey. A road that seemingly has no end in sight and actually feels that way on the drive through it. We pulled off the side of the road and sat around waiting to see how long it would take for another car to come through… when the wait had been more than 15 minutes we decided to just go for it and set up the shot.

One of our clients was the Argyle Diamond mine in Western Australia… It was the largest producing diamond mine in the world producing the rarest naturally colored diamonds before it closed in 2020. This hill reminded us of the mine. It’s cool to imagine what kind of treasures may lie beneath the surface…

We are constantly asking ourselves… what’s better than a Tumi trunk… and we always answer TWO Tumi trunks… This day two were not enough. THREE was the magic number!

We aren’t landscape photographers, but we take photos of landscapes… we aren’t fashion photographers but we take fashion images… we aren’t music video directors, but we direct music videos… we aren’t magazine publishers, but we publish a magazine. So what are we? We are two curious guys that like to challenge ourselves with each creative endeavor we undertake.

Most of the time we are shooting in studio and everything is pre-planned. And we are always moving around, with hardly any time to sit. It’s a little different in the desert… not much to do, not many places to run off to. So we sit... We watch the light change, we spot the odd bird, we listen to how loud the silence is. Its nice to just sit and watch. Sometimes there’s a payoff to all this sitting and watching… sometimes lightening strikes!

We had never shot a bottle of perfume. But then, we haven’t shot a lot of things before we wound up shooting them. We fell in love with the texture of the dry desert ground and found it to be the perfect backdrop and contrast to the liquid inside of the lustrous bottles.

As you see by the footsteps many people make this pilgrimage. Our hope was to capture this image without anyone else being on the dunes… for it to feel as if we were the only people there. We couldn’t resist placing the NYC tag on the Tumi case to show our journey.
